From Nutcracker to Not'Cracker

In 1987 Bronx Dance Theatre held its first performance of excerpts from Nutcracker Ballet as a small Studio Workshop Performance for invited guests. Over the next few years, Artistic Director Barbara Klein, choreographed and staged a full length Nutcracker Ballet that became a Bronx wide Holiday tradition for the next 20 years-1987-2007.

The Ballet included young dancers ages 6-8 in such roles as mice and angels; while the more advanced students ages 10 -21 took on the roles of Clara, The Mouse King, the Nutcracker and more! The Ballet included   the several Pas du deux, and the classical “Snow Flake Ballet” and “Waltz of the Flowers”.

 The Not'Cracker

In 2009 BDT premiered “The Not’Cracker”.   This new original story takes place in a Toy Emporium where the magic of Christmas brings the Toys and Holiday Ornaments to life.

This new twist on the old Holiday Classic, features young dancers ages 6 and up and includes many of the techniques taught at BDT, including Classical Ballet, Hip-Hop, Belly Dance, Tap and more! The pieces range from a Contemporary “Snow Storm”, to Hip-Hop Rag Dolls,  and the Classical Ballet “Waltz of the Flowers” and” Jeweled Ornaments”.  It has already become a family  holiday favorite.

This year’s performance is  scheduled for Sunday December 18, 2011 at 2pm  at Lehman High School
